Expressing joy through traditional Indian dances

All festivals and happy occasions are celebrated with music, dance, laughter and other harmonious activities. While some dances performed at weddings and auspicious occasions are merely a symbol of joy. In this article, we will tell you about some of the famous dances of India that seem to have become an integral part of the culture and tradition of India.

Jhumar Dance

Jhumar is a dance form that is practiced and performed in the state of Haryana. The dance form among the locals of Haryana is commonly called ‘Haryanvi Jija’. The name is derived from the ornamentation and jewellery that men and women adorn themselves with while performing the dance. The women wear a head piece which in Hindi is called ‘Jhumar’ or ‘chandelier’. They usually wear bright and colourful clothes with sparkling jewellery and other necessary accessories while dancing to their heart’s content. The dance is usually performed in large groups at gatherings or celebrations like marriage, birth, etc.

Garba Dance

Garba Dance

Garba is a dance form that is mainly performed in the state of Gujarat and most parts of western India. The dance is performed with great enthusiasm by both men and women of all age groups. The dance is considered an ode to the Hindu goddess Ambi. People wear colorful clothes and a small vest-like garment studded with sequins and hand-stitched with beautiful colorful threads. The Garba dance is usually performed using wooden sticks in the hands. While dancing, men and women come together and play with the beautifully crafted wooden sticks. These wooden sticks are often ornate and strong enough to keep the dance moving.

In Indian culture, dance is an integral part of self-expression and celebration. Indians are known for a variety of dance forms ranging from classical to folk.
